A LITTLE FAIRFIELD HISTORY
Fairfield Christian Church was established in 1860 and the first services were held in a school building located on the South edge of the settlement called “Fairfield.” The church was begun just nineteen years after the first white settler arrived in what is now Taylor Township of Howard County, Indiana.
Since being established in “Fairfield” the town’s name has been changed to “Oakford” but the Church has remained Fairfield Christian Church. The church has grown from a charter membership of thirty people to a growing membership of three hundred fifty people. The staff has grown from a single, shared preacher to our current staff of senior minister, minister of evangelism, youth minister, worship minister, and children’s director.
Because Fairfield believes in the “priesthood of all believers”, a big part of our mission is training and equipping the people of God to do His work. Recently, the congregation has assisted several young people financially in furthering their education by attending Bible College to train for the Lord’s service. The graduates are now serving all over the country in places like New York; North Carolina; California; Lafayette, Indiana; and right here at Fairfield.
Fairfield not only assists members in advancing their service for the Lord through education, but also encourages many members to spread the Word of God throughout the world. Many individuals and groups have participated in missionary trips to many places including: Africa, Mexico, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Russia and American Indian reservations in Arizona. Several of our members have also assisted the victims of Hurricane Katrina in Mississippi and Louisiana.
God has blessed His Church at Fairfield for nearly 150 years. With His continued guidance and wisdom, the leadership expects Fairfield Christian Church to continue to assist people in declaring Jesus Christ as their Savior both locally and around the world for at least another 150 years!
